Today I’m going to show you how to create a slideshow for your online course. If you’re creating online courses, you’re probably using slides for webinars, workshops, or even the entire video training you’re creating. Having great looking slides is an important part of the customer experience. A great slideshow can help you keep your students’ attention, and even entertain them.

First, I’m going to show you my favorite place to purchase slideshow templates. In case you’re not the creative type. After that, I’m going to show you how to create your own slides with or without templates in my favorite graphic design software.

Now, I’ll drop an affiliate link to both of these websites in this post. If you decide to make a purchase using my affiliate link, I will receive a commission, but this does not change the price for you in any way.

Where To Buy Great Presentation Templates

So let’s take a look at my favorite place to purchase great slideshow templates. My favorite place to purchase slideshow templates and a lot of other graphic elements and sound elements and video elements is Envato Elements. Envato Elements is a subscription service that you can purchase for $16.50 a month.

Because this is a monthly thing you can purchase for just like one month and then stop. So you can go in there when you start making your course pay to $16.50 for one or two months, download anything you need to create a great looking online course. And then cancel your subscription if you don’t want to keep it.

So let’s take a look at the presentation templates. Up at the top, you can see it has a whole list of all the different stuff they have, including video templates. But, we want to go to the presentation templates. This is where you’re going to get your slideshows for presenting a webinar, in your online course videos, etc. If you click on that, it’ll show you several.

Now, you want to go to the filters over on the left sidebar. That is where you’re going to pick the type of slide you want depending on the platform you will be using. That can be Keynote, PowerPoint, or Google Slides. All the slides you purchase are going to be editable once you upload them to that platform. Now I personally use Google Slides. So I’m going to click Google Slides, and this is going to show me just the ones for Google Slides.

Another thing you can do is go up to the search bar. If you have a particular style in mind, and put that style in there. Let’s say I want something modern, I type modern in the search bar, and it will auto suggest several types of modern designs. I can go to modern clean, modern minimal, modern bright and modern colorful. There are just a lot of different styles you can type in to try to narrow down your choices.

Once you see one you like, just click through to get a better look. It will show you the graphics of the slides at the top. When you scroll down, you’ll get more information about the slideshow. It gives you the details of the different types of slides there are and the features in each pack. Some packs will come with slides for Keynote, PowerPoint and Google Slides. So this can be used on several slideshow platforms.

Envato Elements is not the only place to purchase great slideshow templates, but it is one of my favorites. Now if you’re more of the creative type, let me show you my favorite website for making your own slides.

Use Canva To Create A Slideshow

Learning to use Canva to create your own slides has many benefits. The first of which is being able to present your slideshow directly from Canva. But I’m getting ahead of myself there. Let’s start with the obvious benefit, which is how easy it is to create fantastic looking slides in Canva.

When you go into Canva, usually presentation will be one of the first buttons right at the top. If you can’t find it, you can always type it in the search bar. But once you click on presentation, it’s going to show you several kinds. It’s got the 16:9, a talking presentation, a mobile presentation, 4:3.

The 16:9, which is 1920 x 1080, is the same size as most videos. It is going to be the one that most of you are going to use. Once you jump into that, it has a little row down at the bottom where you can keep adding slides. They also have a bunch of templates pre-made for you at the top of the left sidebar. If you need to get back to it, you can easily get back to it by clicking there.

Canva has several categories, such as a simple presentation, an educational presentation, a game presentation, a keynote presentation, and on and on. Once you find one you like, you can click on it to see all the slides in that set. Each template varies in the number of slides it has for you to work with. To get the slides from the template into your slideshow, you can actually drag and drop whichever one(s) you want over to the active slide. If they’re not quite in the order you want, you can drag and drop them around at the bottom until you are satisfied with the placement.

Now let’s say that you want to use all the slides in that template in the order they have. That’s really easy. All you do is click apply all # pages. And now they’re all down at the bottom placed in your timeline. This is a great tip to know if you seriously mess up and want to rest them all.

Now you are ready to go in and change the information in each slide to go with your presentation. You can also change the font, the colors, the pictures and add any details that you want from the elements tab on the left sidebar. You can also change the transition of each slide. That is the animation button at the top when you click on a particular slide. You can choose from several transitions and even edit the time the transition takes to go from one slide to another.

Something that you may find helpful when working with slides is you may want to write some notes for your slideshow that you can look at during the presentation There’s a little note button down in the bottom left corner that says notes. You can click on that and put the notes in by each slide. This helps you while you’re presenting. As you switch to each slide, your notes of what is going on in that slide will be over to the side of it.

Present Your Slides Directly In Canva

Once you’re ready to present your slideshow in Canva, you have several options. When you press the ‘Present’ button in the top right corner you get a dropdown menu with 3 choices. It has a standard present, an autoplay and a presenter view. This presenter view is the one that’s going to show you the notes to the side.

With a standard, you can just click and hit present. Your slideshow presentation will open full-screen. If you are sharing your screen in something like Zoom, this works great. If you move your mouse around that screen, it has a little highlight on the area the mouse is pointing to. That is super handy. To go to the next slide, you can just hit the space bar. To get back out of full screen mode, you just hit escape.

The second presentation choice is Autoplay. Autoplay is something you’re probably not going to use when you’re doing a presentation for an online course. But, it’s a handy thing to know how to do. You might play around with that just to see what you might use it for. However, the Presenter View may be something you want to do.

When you go into Presenter View, and hit present, two windows pop up. One window is what your audience sees, and the window you see as the presenter. This is great again if you choose to share just that particular window with the audience in a program like Zoom.

The second window is what you will see. This will show you an area so that you can see which slide is active. You will see the next few slides under that window. You will also see your notes on the side that you put in when creating your slideshow.

There are some bonus parts on the back side in presenter mode. You have a clock on the screen, so you can keep track of the current time, you have a countdown timer showing you how long you have been in presentation mode and a lot of little extras to make the presentation fun.

Canva Presentation 5

Once you’re done with your presentation, you can just exit the presentation, and it takes you back to your slides in Canva. One of the great things about using Canva is if you do a slideshow, but you want to make changes and reuse it, it is going to stay in Canva. You can always come in and change any information that needs to be updated. This keeps you from having to make the same slideshows over and over every time you need updates.

It’s also a great way to foster brand consistency. If you need to create a different slideshow, and you want it to look on brand with your other slideshows, you can just make a copy of it. You can then take that copy and edit it with the new slideshow details. The font and colors will still be there. Make it once and use it as a template for all those that come after. Having a great slideshow for your online course can be easy and make your course look amazing.
