Today I’m going to share with you some amazing reasons why you should create a free online course. Creating a free online course is a very unattractive idea to many people. Why would you put all that work into something like an online course and then give it away for free? I know, this sounds crazy. But trust me, there are many benefits to creating a free online course.

A Free Online Course Is A Great Lead Magnet

Creating a free online course is a great way to market yourself, your products and services. Especially if that product is a paid online course. It is a great lead magnet that targets people that want to take online courses. You can create many types of lead magnets such as checklist, swipe files, and even templates that would go great with the topic you’re teaching in your online course. But that doesn’t mean that the person downloading the PDF or DOC file is going to be interested in sitting down and watching three hours of video on how to do what you are teaching.

If however, they sign up for a mini course or a training workshop, watching 30 minutes or even an hour on a topic that you are teaching for free, they are more likely to purchase your paid online course. Not everyone enjoys taking online courses. By using an online course as a lead magnet for an online course, you are more likely to get people that enjoy taking online courses.

Let People See How You Teach

A free online course gives you an opportunity to show your stuff. If people find you on social media or by reading your blogs, they may not know what to expect from an online course made by you. They are interested in the topic, but might not be sure when it comes to how you teach it. This gives them an opportunity to sample the wares, so to speak. They will get the opportunity to see if they can understand you, and like the pace and style of your teaching.

We all have different teaching styles. For many people on YouTube. My videos are too slow and low energy. Others find my style low stress and easy to follow. I am not the right fit for everyone, and neither are you. Having a free course that people can jump into and check out will move some of those undecided people over to the yes side of buying a paid course from you.

Test Your Online Course

Offering a free online course is a great way to test your ideas and hone your skills. Before creating a full course on your topic, try creating a small course first. I have talked about making mini courses and hosting live courses in several of my videos on YouTube. Here are links to a few of those.

All the methods in those videos will help you make a small course that you can offer for free. By creating a mini course that you offer for free, you will be able to gauge the interest in your market. This will help you validate your online course idea. This also helps you perfect your marketing message on social media. It also allows you to get feedback from the people that take your free course.

Once you have this free online course finished, you can share it everywhere. You can put it on a platform like YouTube to build awareness. You could put it on an online course marketplace like Udemy to do the same thing. You can put it in a learning management system and share that link on social media. Don’t forget to put it on your website as well to start building an email list.

A free course is a great tool for marketing yourself and building authority in your space. If you’re looking for some help creating your free online course, feel free to reach out to me.
